Many of the wedding customs are common among the Hindus, Sikhs and even Muslims. They are a combination of local, religious and family traditions.
India is a very colorful and diverse country. When it comes to celebration it’s done very passionately and wholeheartedly. When is comes to something as scared as wedding the no stone is left unturned.
Wedding ceremonies starts before few days of the wadding. Normally the close family relatives and friends are invited in the early functions. In the Henna tradition bride make-up is being held. This is the last night for a young girl who is spending her memorable hours with her family. Her psyche is palpable only to a girl who had left her youth behind her at her maternal place. Even this night is important for a young boy who is a free bird today and will be tied with a responsibility of a life partner. With dreams of wedding ahead arrives the most important day. During all the functions of wedding girls (bride) has not allowed to go out of his room till the Barat comes and she went with her newly husband.
Dowry became a major practice in marriage institutions and took away a large part of the parents, wealth. Time has changed recently and marriages are performed keeping the dignity especially of the bride’s family intact. It is observed through out history, a women was considered a possession of first her father and then her husband. Her opinions and views were not considered for any decision making and even about her own duties and allowances. Most references to marriage in the ancient texts suggest that the Aryans were monogamous.
In the past the selection of the couple was based on Shastric ideas. The guardians of the girls should not only see the boy’s body, but also consider his conduct family means, education and repute. They should choose one whose age is more than the girls.
According to the customs once a couple was married, it was common for the groom to live with his bride’s family, although sometimes the couple was given their own place to live. The groom was supposed to look after and provide for his bride’s family, and he was to be subservient to his mother-in-law. There wasn’t typically a formal honeymoon, but the young couple was given plenty of alone time.
